Personaly, If you dont really like the car that much, why buy it? Im not saying that for just rx7s, but if you dont really want the car, and your just basicly buying a car, why buy something you dont really really want? Whats the point?

And how isnt a RX7 going to compair to your vr4?

I will admit that between my 97 VR4 and 94 FD, the VR4 has broken more than the FD but they both break all the time so neither are reliable.

I'm not an FD owner, but I live with one, and I've gotta say, I think this thread needs to be more objective. It seems like it'd be better to say something like:

"FD's are less reliable and more fragile than most cars, but if they are well maintained the chances of engine failure will be reduced."

Also, I would guess that several people with horrible experiences did something to harm the car. For example, I talked to a guy that ran 14 pounds on a totally stock fuel system. The car had over 100k miles. I'll bet his car won't last as long as long as most. Also, how many people just start added bolt-ons and don't tune the AFR's properly?

My brother is the one with the FD; it has a downpipe, apexi intake, & koyo rad., and he absolutely will not bolt on any other power adders without first monitoring the AFR's, which is why he has a wideband o2 sensor.

RMiller: *This* is what I like to read - true words of wisdom. I got into a fight on the first page because of a certain someone making blanket statements about the car. Context is everything!

Mr. Ignoramus aka "cosmicbang", you want to fight, we do it via PM or e-mail.
Thanks for that small favour. No, I have no desire to fight, either here, via e-mail, or in the parking lot of a bar. I lost interest in urination competitions several decades ago, and have no closet space for the laundry. I am wiling to consider alternate views and any point you care to (or are able to) make, via PM. Who knows? It might even change my mind. That is provided, of course, you can communicate in a civilised manner without resorting to personal attacks or name-calling. Hmm, that would be the catch then wouldn't it?

Here is a concept to ponder (and of course you are free to disagree with it as well): In general, when you disagree or do not share the same opinion as someone else, you will not make your case by simply saying in effect they are wrong, and calling them a name--regardless of the actual choice of words. While that approach may be often used by, among others, very young children, drunken brawlers, and political campaigns, it is not an effective way to make a convincing argument. At best it is considered immature, at worst it escalates to physical violence and beyond. If you feel so strongly about a particular issue, why not present your reasons for feeling that way and allow them to stand on their own merits? No one cares who you think is--or is not--an idiot, whose daddy can beat up whose, or who has the largest manly endowments. ...And if anyone does care, it won't affect their attitude towards rotary engines. Again, the foregoing is just my opinion and you do not have to agree with it. Consider it friendly non-threatening advice--or rubbish; your choice and I'm not bothered either way.

Best wishes for continued reliable motoring...

You have to be a lunatic to own a 3rd gen. Like certifiably nuts. It is not a resonable thing to do.

I have spent almost $30k in 4 years if you consider the purchase price, maintenance, mods, tires, so forth. If you have parents that will back you up (or are independantly wealthy) and don't mind working on it yourself it is doable. I got mine when I was 19 and a freshman in college. Backup car would be nice, but mine has been my daily driver for over 4 years now, bought it with 90k miles and it almost has 190k on it now!

Like I said, you have to be a lunatic to own a FD, just look at cosmicbang and Speedking!

a rotary is most unreliable thing ever but lots o fun! they are great when they work! if you can pay for new stuff like turbos motor ect then get a piston engine the rotary runs so hot it cooks it shity stock turbos over time and apex seal can go out on you and then new motor time i learned the hard way!

Uh, thanks fitzrx7. Lunatic, ok. FWIW I'm still trying to figure out what the disagreement is, but no matter...

For perspective, the RX-7 is NOT the most unreliable of my cars. It's not second either, maybe number 4 or 5. Maintenance and repair costs are higher for some of the others also. And fundamentally, (apart from turbos and related issues), I actually consider the rotary engine itself to be very reliable.

LOL!!!....good choice of back up car...sick of seeing them around here. Nothing original every burner has one!!

My 2 cents---if you don't like the stock look of the 7 then don't bother. Damn I start salivating when I see them on the street. I've started to habituate to mine under the car cover fortunately...LOL.

Haha. "cosmicbang" doesn't own an FD, I OTOH do. I consider myself obsessive-compulsive, but I'm not clinically insane. With this car I come pretty close though sometimes.

I do, unless someone has made off with it.

^agreed. i don't understand what the problem was to start with, but maybe it is something personal or carried over from some other thread.

the upshot is this...you don't seem like you are too crazy about the looks of the FD (which makes you nuts in my opinion; I want my FD to have my children) and it is not a reliable car. i am sure after all this thread you probably made you've made your decision to stay away from our mentally-imbalanced group

Well, from one 19 year old college student to another, I can say that I love my FD, and despite the cost and things that need to be done to it, I still enjoy it after close to three years of ownership. What your financial situation is, I don't know, but, as everyone else has said, they're expensive to maintain so be prepared for that. I personally love the silver on red combination, it was my first choice when I went FD shopping. I ended up with black on tan, and look forward to aftermarket seats and new carpet (of another color) but they aren't priorities. Since you've owned a high performance TT car before, and your enthusiasitic and somewhat educated, I say go for it, you're better off then many first time FD owners were. I used mine as a daily driver for about two years, and although it did break a bit and maintainence is expensive, it can be done, and many people do it. When I get home this summer, I'm looking forward to rebuilding and porting my motor, fixing the body some, a PFC, intercooler and boost controller, so its a good thing my college is paid for. Well, sorry that rambled a bit, but good luck with what you decide. Josh

If this is going to be a second car! A second car!

Then go for it...BUT, if this is to be your primary vehicle scratch. I wouldn't repeat what a lot of us have in saying the car can go at any minute. Really, there are multiple things that could go wrong at any moment. If you keep on top of things and know the car well and have the time and money to spend a little here and a little there...then no problem.

On another note, for a first time FDer...I would try to find a car with an original engine, moderate mileage, garage kept, limited owners, that's obviously been taken care of (not a premodified, no replacement motors, or trannies). With something like that, you've got a fresh car, no surprises under the hood, or in the suspension, etc. I know that's asking a lot, but it's not THAT difficult to find what you're looking for.
