What do you guys think of this MBC

for manual boost controllers

Mostly used on Mr2s and other 3sgte motors, my brother uses this unit on his MR2 turbo, and it holds very nice at 15psi. Its a dual ball and spring MBC. I needed something to up my boost a little for a temporary time. What do you guys think?

Needle valve (bleeder) controllers still rely on the stock solenoids and ECU maps for control and are therefore prone to non-constant boost control due to weather changes, etc. They also are slower to respond, since there is more line volume to fill (all the way to the stock solenoids) through a very small bleed area.

Ball/spring (and electronic) controllers work quickly and control much more precisely, since (a) they have more flow area, (b) the volume to fill is reduced - the lines from the actuators are blocked, and (c) pressure to the actuators is directly controlled as a function of the spring compression or feed-back to the electronics, not a pre-programmed ECU map that has no idea what the boost is actually doing.

A poppet valve for $1.50? Link, please.

Grainger sells one for $9 and McMaster-Carr sells it for $7.50, but you need to tap a 1/4" nipple on the side, screw on a 1/4" nipple on the bottom (3/8" NPT female), and plug the hole in the top.

$50 is way to high, if you ask me. You can literally build the exact same thing using parts from Home Depot or Ace Hardware. I ran a few ball-and-spring controllers for a while. They cost me less than $10 each and about 30minutes of time to build. They worked great while I had them. IMHO, the only reason to pay any more than that is if you want a MBC that "looks" a little nicer (like the hallman MBC's) or you are stepping up to an electronic. Here's a DIY-guide that will give you a basis to start: http://www.geocities.com/chmwatson/FAQs/mbc.html.

It'll work to control your boost just fine. For $50 bucks it's a suckers deal.
