you can throw all of its handling feel and rigidity out the door, not to mention the added weight of the hundreds of pounds in bracing. even with bracing up the ***, it will still never feel the same. and i think it will look like *** to boot.

Yes, I tihnk it'll look like ***.....BADASS that is.

I don't know how it effects handling, weight, etc. but the MK3 supra guys fabricated some "targa bars" that help with chasis flex and such when the targa is off. I'm sure somthing similar can be fabbed for a targa 7.

I through this idea out on the forum a while ago, didn't get many respones, hope you get more.

You would very quickly realize that this would be a patently bad idea, if you had given it an ounce of thought.

A person on the big list once posted about cutting up a parted-out FD chassis, and found that when the roof was cut, the whole chassis sagged. So the roof is a very important structural member. Also I believe he stated that most of the roof bracing was along the edges, which makes sense, considering that our cars were designed to have a sunroof. The other thing to note is that on a lot of cars which have a convertible/targa variant, the bottom door sills are extremely reinforced. This stiffens up the chassis tremendously, making the roof less of a factor in chassis rigidity. The FD does not have this. Also, we have a window frame, which most targa top cars do not have. This makes it kinda pointless to have a targa roof'ed car; even with the windows down the frame is still there.

Sure, anything can be done, but this would have to be at a tremendous cost of re-engineering pretty much a major chunk of the chassis.

I'm honestly surprised to see this coming from you, Zoomspeed. I've never thought of you as part of the moron list ... and maybe you're not now, but maybe you just didn't think it through.

Factory targa cars are designed to be targa cars. The bars that these JZA80 owners have merely reinforce a structure that's already been designed for a targa top. Bling bling.

Excellent post, jumprdude.

All I said is that I think a targa 7 would look cool. I said I didn't know how it would effects things structurally or handling wise. I didn't say it would work, it didn't say whether it was a bad idea or not. I just said it would look cool. Whats wrong with thinking it would look cool?

And if you must know no, I didn't really thik it through becasue I had a horrible night last night and today I just want to drive off a cliff so cut me some damn slack. Why would I have to thnik it through if I just want to comment on what it would look like?

I think it would be AWESOME.... but I would never do it to my car. ...

One of my favorite cars (that I've owned) was a 914 - and one of the reasons I liked it so much was the targa. My brother had an old griffin targa celica - it kicked *** too.

If the FDs body was designed to be able to be used as a targa, don't you think Mazda would have made one in the FD's 10-11 years of existence?
