Didn't american market FD's lose back seats due to the addition of the rear strut bar which was needed to meet federal crash test mandates?

i think the plan in the US from the beginning has always been to market the RX-7 as a 2-seater here. i don't think the first gens even had the option for rear seats. the FC's did, but most of 'em were 2 seaters. it's a whole different story in japan. most of 'em were 2+2 w/ only some variants being 2 seaters. come on, those seats are jokes. i'd much rather not having them; the bins are very useful. and i really hate the 2+2 300ZX; the stretch job just doesn't look right

I once had a rather dimwitted girl try to climb behind the seats in my FD because she thought space behind the seats with the little storage bins was actually a rear seat

Now that I look back on it, I really should've let her sit back there and just driven around with her crammed in behind the seats.

they probably new that americans are taller and wouldnt fit in the back

 

A lot of us don't fit all that well in the front either...

 

How do people in the US get their hands on these?

They don't. You have to retrofit the seats along w/ new panels and seatbelts.
