Weird dash noises: brake pedal beep?

Hooray! I got my '94 FD on Sunday. It's awesome, but well, it's certainly not a new car. There's a couple of intermittent noises that I need to figure out about asap before I freak out.

1) Occasional whine noise (sounds electrical, like a high frquency beep) when depressing brake. Noise sounds like it is coming from under driver's dash. Normal pedal operation, good brake feel, no warning lights. It happens maybe once or twice during a drive.

2) Occasional whirring noise from under dash. I'm guessing the speedo cable. Not always present though. My Miata makes a similar noise only when it is cold outside.

Any ideas? TIA,
Chris

1-The Whine may be a vacuum leak in the BRAKE booster (Booster may be going bad) or a bad check valve in the Vac line to the booster - Check (w MAZDA dlr) that the Brake RECALL has been done.

2- There is NO Speedometer cable in an FD - it uses an electronic Speedometer & Odometer (as does the MIATA I think) - the whirring noise may be caused by ventlation air spinning the vent/heater/AC fan - does it only happen when the fresh air vent is open?

It had the brake vacuum hose recall done in 10/96. I'll check out the booster. The brake pedal noise could very well be a high-pitched vacuum leak...it does vary in tone. I wonder why it would just do it once in a while?

The whirring/rattling noise I hear may just be something loose under the dash. I can hear it at idle, regardless of brake, clutch, rpm, HVAC or fresh/recirc. Can't hear it once moving.

BTW, the Miata has an electronic tach, but the speedo is mechanical.
