Smile Water temp. sensor location ??

Hello all,

I have a question, my mechanic installed my new temp. sensor to my t-stat housing the other day, making it ready for installation of the wires etc. but on the t-stat housing itself there is 2 plugs, one on top of the housing and one in the side of the housing, he has removed the plug in the side and screwed the new sensor in to that thread, is this completely wrong ?? as I can see from the post/pictures all choose to drill into the front of the housing, make new thread, and install the sensor there, is this the only place it should be put on the t-stat housing ?? thank you very much.

The sensor can be installed in any location that has coolant running. The difference comes into whether you get decent readings before the t-stat opens (or pre/post radiator).

Hello Mahjik,

Ok, thank's but my concern is that most people seems to think the best location is at the T-stat housing in front of the housing just below or to the right from the buzzer/low level warning sensor, and they have to drill a new hole/thread for the new water temp. sensor, why do that if you can just screw it in the side of the housing where the plug is ?? maybe because it will not read right there ??

Most sensors come in a different NPT thread size than those plugs...at least here in the States. Placing it at either location on the housing will prevent it from getting readings before the thermostate opens.
Personally I recommend using the throttle body coolant line with a simple 'T' fitting for your sensor. It's explained completely in this thread.... https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...highlight=temp
You will get accurate readings before the thermostat opens, it's simple to install and requires no drilling.

I put mine in the water pump housing under the alternator.

Your location is fine. The main issue is that you won't get great temp readings until the t-stat is completely open, but it will work. I used a similar locate for years without issue.

Thumbs up

Hello guys,

Thank's a lot for your replys to me, now I have more ideas where to put it, I think my mechanic just thought the location in the side of the housing was the easiest place to put it since the AEM water temp. sensor came with an adaptor that fitted in the plughole thread ! he did not think of if it actually was the best place for the sensor to make decent readings, I will talk to him about this, thank's again guys.

Are you referring to the plug location of the passenger side filler neck? I think it's 3/8" in size... That opening is found plugged on manual transmission FD's, but on automatics it hosts a sensor there.
I personally don't see a problem fitting your water temp sensor there. Yes, you won't get actual temp readout until your thermostat opens up but that takes like 3-5 min during summer months. Besides if you still have OEM temp sensor functioning in your gauge cluster - use it to eye ball the temp rising and then reference your aftermarket water gauge. By then your thermostat will be fully open.

Now, many say it's bad because if your thermostat is stuck closed you are screwed. Not really, I think. You still have your OEM gauge as a backup. And if shortly after 5 min of driving you don't see your aftermarket gauge give you temp high enough - this is your tell sign to drive back and check the stat.

What am I missing here?
