During my rebuild I experienced the same thing where the water pump turbine assembly was actually touching the water pump housing. The housing was scored from the blades.
I had a spare water pump to compare with and it looks like everything was pressed in deeper. I thought about this for a while I have come to the conclusion that I must have pressed it in a while back when I changed out the pulley. I think I used a screw driver or something propped between the filler neck and the pulley to hold the pump stationary while removing the bolts. The force must have pressed the assembly in.
I set the pump between two metal rails and used a rubber mallet to press the pump's assembly back until it matched the spare pump's gap from the back of the pulley boss to the water pump bearing support plate. It took a couple good hits, but it went back and it now spins without touching.

no i mean just the pulley itself i took off the stock one and the thing that spins(without a pulley on it) squeeks with the pulley off or on.. it wasnt doing that before when i had the stock one and all of a sudden it happens.....very weird and annoying...
