Wastegate on 99 TypeRS/RZ Twins

Hi!

I recall reading somewhere, that these TypeRS/RZ turbos have bigger WG in comparison with stock twins... Can anyone confirm this? Or maybe someone who is running them (SleepR1 or TimB) can answer: Do you have any issues with controlling boost with opened exhaust? What exactly do you have done to the exhaust?

Thanx and have a nice day!

I don't recall if the wastegate was larger when I had them out before the install, when compared to the stock unit. I have dp, resonated mp, and catback and so far don't get boost creep in the upper range. I was worried about that as well but the line stays nice and flat (on the commander) when going from 5500 to redline. I just need to hunt down the reason for my venting boost as I near transition.

Thanx for answering. I'll tell my mechanic to compare them, when my old ones are out.

Anyway, I tried to find some comparable pics old vs new WG:

If this is what we should be looking at, then I think they are the same, right?

look the same to me in the pics. Those old 93's look beat to hell and back. You'll like the new kick the 99's have and will spool a bit quicker as well.

I count on that :-) Unfortunatelly my car is being rebuilt and won't be ready until late spring... And those old turbos aren't mine, just some example of cracked T-manifold I found somewhere...

I don't think there is any difference in wastegate size. The '99 J-specs are supposed to be a complete bolt-on replacement, with no further mods.

I run full open exhaust dp/mp/RB dual tip catback. I control the boost with the Power FC which uses the stock precontrol wastegate actuators on the turbos. Works fine, but needs dialing in when the weather turns cooler. Mostly you need to decrease the precontrol/wastegate duty cycles, and increase the target boost to keep from hitting fuel-cut--at least with a midpipe. My Power FC is dyno-tuned to 15 psi. FWIW I avoid WOT runs in the early morning or evenings during the winter just to be on the safe side LOL In the summer, I need to increase my precontrol/wastegate duty cycles on the Power FC to achieve target boost. Many complain about the Power FC's boost control, I honestly think it works fine. Besides I can spend the $500 that I save from having to buy a separate boost controllor, on HKS Twin Power Ignition Amps, so I can match Tim Benton's dyno plot LOL

Sounds great. I will control the boost with ProfecB, so I shouldn't epect any issues with it then? Good news for me

Assuming your AFRs are safe no issues with ProFecB boost controller.

Right, and just set the PFC's boost control numbers higher than what you are using in the Profec (so the profec is acutally doing the control job).

Manny, when are you getting the HKS twin ignition and re-tuning?

Rx7 Store is holding a Twin Power and Harness now. I'm just waiting for a break in the weather, so Zavier can install and retune the Power FC moo ha ha I'll post the dyno in the Power FC forum

You are absolutely right.

Darn I'm soo stupid... LOL... I was about to reply, off course it is, at least it's driven by the WG control actuator... Ups, it's NOT. It's the precontrol valve!

OK, here's the real thing, unfortunatelly I don't have any better picture than this one and actually we cant see much here:

Hmm... this makes me wonder if I installed my restrictor plates in my exhaust for nothing
Maybe I need to remove them and see if I can hold boost under control.
