IS the voltage regulator built into the alternator?
Find a good local alternator shop. Alternators get pretty tricky, and it's best to leave it to the pros. Not to mention it will likely be pretty cheap to have a local shop work on it. The alternator is nothing special or fancy - it's a pretty plain jane alternator.

this is a FD alternator on a FC tii.
its gotten more and more common but i can start the car, regardless of warm, cold, or just driven. Its will idle no problem. but its reading 9vs or less, then lights are dim and the fuel pressure is 10psi low at idle. If i give the car gas, its hits a wall at 2k, and dies. cannot drive under this condition.
sometimes i can restart the car, and its will be fine, sometimes i just have to come back in ten minutes and try again.
but more recently, its started to have erradic voltages while operation normally. i checked at the batt. and its recieving a voltages from 11-15volts bouncing around. Its also hesistating, idling a little rough, and burning more gas than normal. Plus under boost it misses and dies like its looses spark.
another idea im pursuing is replacing the wire from the ecu to the alt that controls the regulator. as its an FC and the wiring harness was chopped alot from a previous owner.
