Vip, Vipp, Vipp -- Sound

Met up with a 2002 Z06 today and we had a quick go from 20 up and when I shifted to 3rd and found my clutch slipping bad all the way until I caught it and took my foot off the gas around 7400 rpm.

During the 3rd gear episode, the car made several Vip, Vippp, vipp like sounds until I took my foot of the gas. Any idea what this was? Was it the clutch trying to engage or was it something in the engine???? Afterwords everything seemed to be ok, but would like someone's diagnosis.

FWIW, he got the jump in 1st, but I hung and maybe gained a 1/4 length until third gear. I fully didn't expect that... Had third been working I'm confident I would've pulled ahead.

My car:

94 stock clutch, pfc commander 12.5psi, greddy smic, hiflow cat, dp, cb...
