Use AST with Evans NPG?

Do you use an AST when using Evans NPG coolant? Also at what temp do you have to worry about the coolant seals going out (silicone)? My car was actually boiling over quite severely whenever I turned off the car and got heat soak. I don't think my cooling fans are functioning properly.

yeah when you turn off the car the waterpump is not running so the coolent just sits there, of course it's going to heat up. But once you start your car the temp should drop right down. I don't think the heat soak temp is high enough to kill the coolant seal.

no I did not use an AST with Evans. I eliminated it a long time ago.

Just remember, if you keep the AST thats an extra 20oz of coolant (if not more) that you have circulating and in Texas you might need it.

that's true but I never understood how that would help any. The increased fluid probably increases the overall heat capacity of the coolent in the system but I think if it's going to overheat it will overheat with or without the 20oz...hahah another AST debate.

So no air gets in the cooling system with Evans cause it's a zero pressure system? What exactly does the AST do anyway?

The coolant heats up while its circulating within the system, and air bubbles develope. Air is nowhere as good as a conductor as water/coolant, so this results in higher engine temps. The AST is designed to seperate the air bubbles from the system, hence the name Air Seperation Tank.

For those that have gone with the waterless Evans system, supposedly its claim to fame is that its much more resistant to developing these air bubbles, and there for do not need the AST (theoritcally). Its my understanding that the Evans coolant expands more then water/coolant, so a large (though how large, not sure - stock maybe fine) overfill tank is neccesary.
