Upgraded stock twins other than Pettit?

Well, last night was the first chance I had to crawl under the FD (had it one week).. and I found my coolant leak easily, a slowly deteriorating plastic end tank on the radiator. So after calling to confirm that I can pick up my Fluidyne today, I got to thinking about the turbos. I noticed a decent amount of oil on the turbo side under the car, particularly on the oil drain pipe. I know it may be premature to think that I need new turbos until I find the source of the leak, but it got me to thinking.. why hasn't, or even better, why can't other shops rebuild/upgrade our stock twins? I am in CA so keeping the car APPEARING smog legal is always important, plus I like the power curve of the stock setup. I have a buddy at a shop out near where I live that has done a lot of turbo work for me when I had my Supras.. is it really just a matter of machining the housings/wastegate ports and fitting slightly oversized wheels in them? What exactly does Pettit do to them to charge their INSANE price of $2500.. seems like one could get very comparable work done for much much less.

Lastly.. the turbos are made by Hitachi?

M2 and SR also make them but they are expensive no matter what. The stock cartridges go for around $500 a piece I think and the upgraded ones are ball bearing so they will be even more plus the labor of tearing them down and machining them. Your best bet would be to try to find a rebuild place to upgrade them like maybe Turbo City or Majestic.

Just sounds like the oil return lines on your turbo's are leaking. My FD does the same thing. The gaskets are cheap but I think they are a pain to replace.

Unless you are having boost problems, I don't think the turbos are bad.

TurboCity or Turbochargers.com both sell upgraded turbos for much less.
