Twin Turbo and boost blues : yet another question......

Hi all,

I have never owned a turbo car of any sort nor I have dirven another persons FD to make any comparison of how a "working" twin turbo car works. I pretty much picked up what I know about my car from reading from the forum and driving my fabulous seven.

I've been reading up on other post regarding boost problems, but nothing seems to be close to what boost problems I have. Again, my set up is pretty basic. Catback, downpipe, and intake. When I was running all stock, I had 10-8-10. I installed catback and downpipe, I got 10-8-10. Sometimes 11-8-10. When I installed my intake, I had 8s all across. Now, this 22nd day of April 2002 @ 3000 rpm to redline WOT at any gear I only get 5 lbs of boost. My boost gauge goes to 5-6lbs. then to 0, then that's it.

I am preparing to do my vacuum hoses...I think I pretty much have everything - silicone hoses, spare solenoids, gaskets, check valves. I'm also replacing my turbo control solenoid and all my couplers with silicone ones. I just have a couple more questions about "venting" and "how to determine if my turbos are bad".

- Venting : Where does this come in and what parts are affected? BOVs and CRVs? If so, how can I figure out if this is what's causing all of these problems or at least helped cause this problem? It gets pretty loud sometimes. I could hear it spool and then WHAPISHHHH - that's the sound that it makes. This got gradually louder as I upgraded air intakes. First, when I installed my Cold Air duct and stockbox w/ K&N filters, it was way louder than when I had it stock. Now that I have the Apexi Cold Air intake, I had a moo-ing sound, but I fixed that because I found out where the restrictor pill was supposed to go. But the "WHAPPISHHHHHH" sound is still loud.

- Bad turbos : How do you know if you have a bad set? No blue smoke or any smoke here. Although one time, I downshifted, accelerated, looked in my rear view and saw smoke puff out. I also get this weird sound when I slow down...like (Higher pitch to lower pitch) Prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt. Something mechanical or something. Is that a bad bearing? or is that how it's supposed to be. I don't have a clue of what I am dealing with. Also I have no oil leaks around the turbos. They were rebuilt at 70K. I now have 110K.

I bought my FD 2 years ago. It had 100K on it. Previous owner had a new engine put in at 70K. At the same time he also had the turbos rebuilt at 70K. No reliabilty mods were done when he had it. Right know, all reliabilty mods are done except for the AST replacement.

Thanks,
Jason

lost boost

Sounds like you sprung a leak somewhere check all the hoses and connections.

Mine had the giant o ring between the throttle body and boost pipe missing.

the hoses may look good but it dosent take much of a hole to create a drop in boost.
