Question turbo rebuild???

last night i blew my engine....because i have to put a new one in there i thought i would re-build my turbos. i saw something on this forum before that it was like a little kit with new bearings, seals......and it came with a video to tell you how to do it. does anybody know what i am talking about?

been there, done that, not a DIY project, infact, I wouldn't even really recommend rebuilding them at all, just save your cash and replace them, trust me, its cheaper in the long run..

dont waste your money rebuilding them.

I wasted 3k in the last year doing rebuild ***** twice.

save your money and either get a new turbo or get the m2 set or go single....honestly...you will save more money if you get new than if you go with a rebuild.

my first rebuilt set lasted 0 miles before they leaked and smoked a bit....eventually this led to losing a quart of oil every three hundred miles...

my second set smoked a lot and sounded like a dentist drill.

do not use turbo city

do not use performance techniques.

Did they work ok before your engine blew? If so just inspect them clean them, I soaked them in Gunk, make sure all looks well and they spin easy, then put them back in. Its true you will just waste your money and if the vanes are intact most likely the bearings are ok. IMHO

You could also buy a set of used turbos when someone else goes with a single turbo setup.

My car and turbos were at about 45K, I would find some oil in the intake after autocrossing, and it seemed to be getting worse, in the fall I failed emissions, I found I had a leaking LIM gasket, to get to it, I pulled the motor (good thing to with all of the bolts I broke).

While I had the engine on a stand, I did a hose job, and thought, what the heck, the primary is good, but the secondary leaks, mite as well put new seals and bushings in them both. (WRONG).

The first rebuild was strong, (for about 100 miles) something must have interfered with the exhaust seal on the primary, because I cooked it and melted it into the housing, so I pulled them out, fixed them up as best I could for the next race, this was a compete no, go, could have worked for sky writing though =)

So I turned to the parts trader, and bought a used set.. From a low mileage car, with hairline cracks in the exhaust.. Well the cracks by the waste gate were over 2mm, the center sections were so brittle that one cracked during shipping, and the slop was very bad, infact worse than the ones I started with.

So, I took the best of everything, put it in my car for the last race of the season, and promised my wife that I would not spend time working on my turbo’s next season because I had learned my lesson…

Call Mazda Motorsports, and just spend the 2500..

If your current ones are fine, save your money. These Hitachi units are pretty reliable if taken care of.
