Turbo Rebuild?

Was looking at my stock turbos while my car was up on a lift, and the rear turbo casing seems to be stained black, like a small amount of oil is leaking out and burning off. Still have full boost, but it makes me want to rebuild it just in case. I want to do it myself, because I don't have the money to buy a rebuilt turbo. Here on base I have access to a shop, where I can do all the cleaning. Turbo city sells a gasket kit for the turbo rebuild for $150. But it seems to me that the turbo might need new bearings or something of that nature, or am I just wrong?

Also, are there any upgrades that can be done to the stock twins during a rebuild, like replacing a compressor wheel?

Anybody have any advice?

Thanks,
Marc

What exactly is porting the wastegate, and what does it accomplish?

Do I need to send the rebuilt turbos up to turbo city to be balanced or could a local shop balance them? After reading that thread, it seems obvious that they do need to be balanced. Would it be a good time to do the vacum lines when you pull the turbo asm?

Also I've seen reference to 'rebuilt rotating assemblys' (http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/turbo_rebuild.html). But I haven't been able to find any other information on it, and the post was made in '99 so I don't think the guys email would be valid anymore. Anybody have any idea what this is about?

porting the wastegate will avoid boost CREEP. later on if you decide to put on a mid pipe it will really pay off! to port the waste gate you have to pull the turbos and take the assembly apart, which you will do anyways. there is no negative effect on porting the wastegate unless, you prot too large and make the hole larger than the flapper door. you can find inst. by doing a search and typing in wastegate.

anyone can balance your turbos that know how to balance. it usually cost more than what arexseven paid to balance them, but i guess he got a deal somehow. You dont always have to balance the turbos. i think arexsevens problem was that he over torque something.

as for the vacuum lines, you can swap them at anytime really. pulling the turbos wont make it much easier. what you have to do is pull the UIM. IMO I would do one at a time.

There are so many posts about rebuilds gone bad that I am skeptical about it.

^ anywhere from $500-$750 depending on the quality, how well you know your mechanic, and if you pull out your own turbos or have the mechanic pull them.

Well I was wondering of having them pulled out and sending them off somewhere.
