Trying to figure out what ECU I have..

Hello, I just bought a 1993 RX7 5-speed from a credit union and the ECU is missing out of the car. I talk to the owner who let the car go back and he said it was in the car when it was picked up and someone must of took it out from the repo yard. From what I have read there is several different part numbers for the ECUs and you have to make sure to buy the correct one. How can I figure out which ECU my car needs, if there isn't one to reference to? Could I tell by the VIN? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Any stock FD ecu should be fine, as long as the car has not been modified very much.

Hi Adam,

Have your VIN handy then contact Ray Crowe. He can help! If you are not looking for a brand new unit then you may be able to find a used one on the forum. I'm sure someone has a stock '93 ECU for sale.

Welcome to the FD World! It sucks that someone swiped your ECU though.

Cheers,
George

I checked the microfiche for my '94 and noted there are several part numbers for the ECU.

Look in section 6600 - Switches & Relays (Engine) for item 18-880A. There should be options for:
1. California M/T - N3A3-18-881B
2. California A/T - N3A4-18-881C
3. Federal M/T - N3C1-18-881A
4. Federal A/T - N3C2-18-881A

The above P/Ns are for the '94 model so please verify on the '93 fiche and verify the emission standard for your FD (emissions decal on the hood). I would bet dimes to donuts that Ray would ID the correct ECU based upon your VIN.

Do you know what mods, if any, were done to the car?

Cheers,
George

In my opinion, the later the ECU the better. It's going to have some updates to it. Anecdotally speaking, I've never felt any of the hesitations people complain about on my '95 with stock ECU. In modern days the dealerships can reprogram an ECU, but back in the 90s they were fixed programming. Any early ECU is going to have a tune that was finishd before the car went to market.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I believe I have located the correct ECU for the car. Here is a mod list on the car. The FC commander and boost controller were also yanked when they took the ECU. Given this mod list, will I need to have this car tuned for it to run properly?

Adam,

Sadly, I cannot answer that question. But given all those mods, i would recommend that a tune is validated for your steed. I don't think you need a stock ECU. A Power FC is the tuneable ECU for our cars. That is what you get with pre-OBD2 components! Again, I am no ECU expert but you may need a Power FC.

Anyone else care to chime in?

Cheers,
George

I would not run a stock ecu with those mods. You should get an ecu that you can tune, like a power fc. A stock ecu will not provide enough fuel for those mods unless you run really low boost.

The fact that the power FD was listed in the list means he was running that before he removed it.....a stock ecu will run terribly on that setup, lucky if it'll run at all.

buy a power fc, get it tuned. Don't go stock. Waste of money
