Trim in air inlet?

Hey all,
I was just wondering...

The are two pieces of black plastic on the sides of the air inlet in the front bumper.
It would seem that they don't serve much purpose other than restricting the air flow into the engine compartement/radiator/etc...

Do they provide some structural support maybe?
Or can they just be taken off?

Thanks.

The direct air into the oil coolers on the R1/2 models. They seal the air path so the air has to go through the cooler as opposed to around it. Leave them in, unless they're badly damaged. They'd serve no purpose if they were.
