Used trans can be found in our forums or on Ebay for $200-250 +shipping. The shipping is what really drives up the cost so try to find one close enough for local pickup.

If you want to repair yours and it is just the 5th gear, the repair can be made with only removal of the tail and intermediate sections so it is not that difficult. The main section and shaft does not have to be disassembled. Possible you may not need more than a 5th gear synchro assy. and the final locknut sb < $100 for those from Ray at Malloy. You could also put on the updated stiffer shift select spindle as per the TSB to help prevent recurrence of the problem from missed shifts. There is full and excellent documentation on this site on how to do the work by dgeesaman.

If the problem is just 5th gear it does not need a full rebuild if you get someone to do the work for you on your unit.

Changing out the 5th gear synchro isn't that bad. If you are careful and methodical and are handy with tools you can probably do it.

Search on 5th gear synchro there are a number of threads on it.

Like crimsonprise and daleclark said there are options out there. It just depends on what you have in mind. I just bought a rebuilt tranny from one of the members on here. And actually had the one that went out of my car rebuilt. It cost me like $290 just for 5th gear synchro assembly, shifter collar for 5th and reverse and a tube of sealant. So just a matter of options out there.

i do the 5th gear synchro swap for $250 labor and parts(unless it's been ongoing for a long time and 5th is toast), transmission out of the vehicle. trans in vehicle it is a $550 job not including clutch if it's that time.

lancaster isn't all that far but still a trek.

I just swapped my 5th gear synchro out. It's a lot easier than I was expecting. I got all the parts from Ray at Malloy. The only "special" tool you'll need is to get a gear puller from autozone/advanced etc, and then extend the arms. Mine were 14" hole to hole and worked great. I also learned a bit about the magical black boxes that they call transmissions.
