Transmission reached its end?

First off, I did use the search but I am looking for some new opinions. I can no longer shift into reverse. Everything else is fine though. All the other gears shift into fine. Can anyone guess what the problem can be?

Also, if my tranny is shot what would be the cheapest way of getting a new tranny?

Regards,
J

I would make a guess that your transmission will not let you get in reverse.

btw,

You can get a rebuild from some shops for 1300 or so, assuming that a standard rebuild can fix it. Most shops around here charge $1500 for a standard rebuild. You can pick up a used transmission for around 400-500 from the forum and have it installed for $250-$400.

I went with a brand new OEM tranny, paid $2300 with shipping + 280 for install. they dont make new tranny's anymore, but you can get a reman tranny for just a little more than what they used to charge for the new ones...

My best advice from personal experience:

Purchase 5th & Reverse gears, synchros & sliders from Mazdaformance. Follow the instructions posted for 5th gear syncro and do your self for a few $100's.

This is assuming you have a 2nd car, the tools and the storage to do this. If not, 2nd choice is buy parts from Mazdaformance and take to AAMCO for the labor and hope you don't have shattered peices throughout the entire inside which means more labor and possibley more parts at their cost.

For $500 you could get a used JDM trans from Nippon Motors but they have been out of stock for over 6 mo.
