Transmission Noise (Bad bearing?)

I'm looking for some input guys, I recently purchased a FD and had a hard time getting use to the shifter and well, long story short. I grinded about 3-4 times downshifting into gear 1 on about 5mph rolls in the past week that I've driven the car(gear 1 is ridiculously notchy and I really need to force it in, not sure if that's normal)

Anyways, now I'm getting this spinning or scratching sound if you will, on pretty much all gears while in driving. There's an ever slight noise in neutral, but only noticable if you stick your ear on the shifter panel.

What do you guys think?

Check to see if you have a short shifter in your car. What your describing sounds like the gear noise typical with a shifter stalk/shaft that isn't isolated in rubber as the OEM one is.

i hope your rev matching when you get it into 1st..... 1st gear is locked out unless you put it in neutral, rev it, then put it in......

dont try to go into first gear while your moving would have been a good start..

change your gearbox oil, hope the problem goes away and hope you havent damaged anything.
If problem dosent go away, who knows. youll need to tear it open.

First off thanks for the quick replies!

The car currently has a B&M short shifter

As for gear 1 locking out, I had no clue. My other car goes into gear 1 while moving no problem, and yes I do rev match while down shifting. I bought the car with the typical 5th gear grind (but I live in the city, so I never get in to gear 5) so I was going to rebuild the entire thing eventually.

But my problem is the scratching noise that occurs while in drive. This happened right after my last grind. Like the car was telling me it was the last one it's going to take!

I will change the oil tomorrow. I'll go find some gl4- 75w-90. I read somewhere that it's 2.6 quarts capacity. Can someone confirm this?

Well, I'm an idiot. I test drove the car again to get better sympthoms

When driving in gear1 or gear2 and disengaging the clutch and leaving it in neutral. You hear something just spinning in place. The faster I go before disengaging the clutch, the faster the spinning after disengaging. I think I have more than a clutch problem

If by "disengaging the clutch" you mean you release your foot from the clutch pedal while in neutral, then that spinning sound is likely to be the main input shaft bearing.

Rebuilding for the input shaft bearing is a pretty easy job. Unfortunately most transmissions have more wear than that and the amount of wear on the gears of higher mileage transmissions usually makes rebuilding them of limited value.

If you're serious about rebuilding and the transmission has more than 100k miles, I would try getting just the input shaft bearing replaced. Replace your throwout bearing and input shaft bearing with it. If there is damage beyond that, replace the transmission.

My apologies for the thread jack, but my car (OEM tranmission except for a light flywheel) has the same symptoms. Can anyone tell me how much a Shop would charge to do this job?

Thanks.

Don't fool with rebuilding the trans, get a used JDM tranny for $300-400 and swap it in.

i keep seeing people suggest JDM trannies, when alot of the time i find them to be as abused as a 100k mile USDM transmission. put one in the other day and second gear synchro is severely worn.

unless the gears have been grinding for a while i really don't see too much issue with rebuilding them, i do see more people try to pass off junk trannies as good however.

Could be low on fluid if you hear a noise while in neutral with the clutch out. Change the fluid.

When working with any used tranny I always remove the lower cover first. Beaten shifter teeth and synchros are easily seen before going to the trouble of installing it.

That said, 2nd gear tends to be balky. I replaced my 2nd synchro once and found no change in shifting characteristics. It would be nice if we could get synchros made with graphite inserts.

This is one thing I haven't tackled yet but would like to. Since I've put so much effort recently into rebuilding the engine and suspension I know murphy's law is going to rise up and munch my tranny.

We know how these cars are....fix one thing and something you haven't touched yet falls apart soon after. gotta love it.

I'm just curious if this is something you can DIY and what the average cost is to replace all that worn out crap.

Nevermind I just found another of your excellent write ups from your sig

Looks like fun, I'm going to get a used tranny and rebuild that sucker just for the experience of it.
