Transmission issues...tearing apart.
Okay, a friend of mine who is a tranny tech at our Ford/Mazda dealership is tearing my tranny down to replace a few synchros. Now, I am not familiar with tranny's like I am engines, but he is telling me that with the SST, he is having a very difficult time getting the bearings out of the tranny. Said he as soaked them in PB blaster as well. Any ideas? Is this a common problem? 120k on the tranny...

Sorry Trev. Some years back a friend and I replaced the 5th gear synchro in mine using an extended bearing puller he'd fabricated and following instuctions in this how-to from the stickys. http://mahjik.homestead.com/files/ho...o/synchro.html
We only changed one synchro but no real issues as I recall. Rear main bearing came right off.

I just pulled mine apart....not sure which bearing he's having problems with but a couple of tips would be to use a big C-clamp on the the puller to press the arms together so they don't pop off the bearing and I also found that the cut outs in the case for the puller arms are little small for some pullers, I warmed the case with a torch which allowed me to slip the bearing and shaft out of the case about an extra 1/4" allowing me to get the puller on the bearing a little easier. hope this helps
