Thumbs down Transmission grinding noise (video inside)

Last night I took my FD to the quarter mile. I launched it at almost 6k, way too hard I guess and now the drivetrain is making a horrible grinding noise. I can get it into every gear, and every gear grinds (including reverse) EXCEPT 4th. All of the syncros have been replaced and I'm running an ACT street/strip clutch. I drove it home that night and it still pulls hard. The slight grinding noise you will hear in the video has been there since I bought the car, it's my B&M short shifter without the rubber insulator..

Here's the video of my run that caused the noise. (Yes, I know I'm a shitty driver etc. etc.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLMMxiE2eD4

And here's the video of the noise on the way home.

don't speed like that with your gf in the car dude! lol. she was a nice girl, you wouldn't want her dead would you?

With all that wheel hop I would first guess that it is an issue related to that (maybe broken differential). That was a **** ton of wheel hop. Told you you needed diff bushings!

If it were related to anything other than the trans he'd hear it in 4th, also...

first off were you inspired by this " not double clutching like you should" lol j/k c'mon easy with the carless shifting unless you wanna end up playing catch the clutch with your g/f j/k

i would recommend drop the tranny its got to be the clutch.
well also this did happen once to a customer of ours he bent some fingers on the clutch (have no idea how) well anyways your gonna have to drop the trans to figure it out.

I have replaced the diff bushings with solid ones. We were talking about pillow *****! lol

And I just jacked it up and you can hear it in 4th I guess.

Someone with experience with a bad throw out bearing said that's what he thinks it is.

Before opening the transmission, i would remove the driveshaft and independently turn the transmission and the diff(with the wheels off). Youll be able to feel resistance or hear something rattling in either if there is a problem.

Sounds like the bearings in your diff took a **** or some teeth are rattling around

I ran a 13.7 lol...On the same setup I ran a 12.7 a couple months ago. I have solid diff mounts..

I got under the car and started it...listened with my mechanic stethoscope and it sounds like it's coming from right where the driveshaft enters the differential.

So I took out the magnetic drain plug for the differential and there was a glob of metal on the end.

I'm assuming this isn't normal..lol

Generally metal shavings inside the diff or trans fluid is a bad sign....

Wait, so there's NOT supposed to be metal in my gear oil?

Sounds like you found your problem man.

Well...It's not shavings, it's like metal goo...And I know some of this is normal from wear and tear...I'll take the back plate of and see if I can find anything.

Metal goo... that's what the magnet is there for, to keep that stuff out of circulation. Some amount of that is normal. Big pieces, not.

I'm still thinking it's a trans problem, based on your statement that it DOESN'T DO IT IN 4TH.

Well, I guess the next step is to open up the diff and take a look inside, if I cant find anything...drain the tranny and check for shavings, if I don't find anything, open up the inspection plate..

Why would you launch at 6k on what are presumably street tires? I can't expect you thought they were going to hook up...

And what dragstrip lets you take passengers, both without helmets? Seems like a big accident waiting to happen.

Next time don't drop the clutch at 6k, and maybe wear a helmet.

There, I just saved your next differential AND your life. Smart guy

What a douche you are, he asked about the grinding noise not safety advise.

I think the no helmet thing is the fact he is in FLORIDA. Even people on motorcycles don't wear helmets there what makes you think they would do it in cars? Even if they are on a drag strip? Plus I agree with everyone else, he is looking for help not your two cents about him having a passenger and being unsafe. No need to say those extra comments. You can go have a few drinks with your buddies and talk about this in peace without bringing more **** into his already shitty situation.

You're right, that's a great idea. What fun would rx7club be anyway without dumb *** owners to make fun of over drinks?

From the symptoms (noise in all but 4th) and the drain plugs, I'm going to guess that you have a transmission bearing problem. Any time there is side load on the damaged bearing, there will be noise. 4th, IIRC, does not put side loads on the shaft bearings.
