Transmission (5sp manual) shifts fine, but sounds like it has a pile of gravel in it. I've been told by a couple of shops it's toast. However, I haven't had much luck finding a place that sells the rebuild kits or rebuilt transmissions. (Internet challanged I am) The shop I talked to wanted 2k to rebuild it. Any suggestions as to prices and where to find a place that sells them? Is it worth it to rebuild it myself with help from a mechanic friend or buy the rebuilt?

 

KDRotary (www.kdrotary.com) rebuilt mine. No problems with it. I think prices range from 750 to 1200 bucks for a rebuild depending on how bad it is. I tell you this. You need to go to an expert that has rebuilt these type of transmissions before, not your usual Turbo350 GM tranny ya know!

I would try to pick up a used transmission from a wreck. You could probably bolt it right in and be in good shape for a long while.

Rebuilding it yourself is definitely possible (I've got mine in the kitchen right now swapping in a different 5th gear ratio!), but the main problem with doing this is that you need a good set of pullers to remove all the bearings and stuff. Other than finding a long enough puller, I don't see any reason you couldn't do it yourself for less than the cost of a junkyard transmission assuming you don't have major damage inside there.

If you DO decide to rebuild it yourself make sure to order all the little crap that they tell you to replace like the snap rings, roll pins, etc... also figure on replacing your shifter bushings and your 5th gear synchro and selector spring thing (to minimize chances of breaking the 5th synchro later).

Look up pineapple racing. They give you lots of options for a tranny rebuild along with prices. Alot of people on the board have nothing but good things to say about them.

it cost me $300 for labor (rebuild only)

 

when i got my 94 touring it had an auto. i got my 5-speed from a junk yard. i would not get a used trans for these cars-the chances of getting an abused one are way to high. i rebuilt my trans myself. i am a mechanic but this trans is not particularly difficult and the repair manuel is complete and easy to follow. either rebuild yourself or send it a qualified shop and never worry about your mixer again(assuming you know how to drive).
