Tranny Swap troubles
Ok, the swap and subsequent rebirth of my pheonix is close however I've run into a little snag. The mechanic helping me with the swap says that my crossmember/transmission mount (car doesn't have a transmission mount, I know) and differential mounts won't match up to the standard transmission and stock 4.10 rear. Everything else is done and I just need some confirmation and possible solutions to this dilemna hopefully from someone who has done the swap before. Can anyone help out a frustrated and slightly irritated Rx-7 owner?

Everything on the drivetrain bolts up the same. The PPF is the same between auto and 5sp, however the driveshaft is different on both ends. The rearend bolts up the same regardless of gear ratio, however the auto's had a larger input flange than the 5sp (and the driveshafts differ here as well).

Alright thanks, I'm going to go there and yell at him and then most likely be forced to bolt it up myself. Damn crap. Thanks RR. You're always helping me. lol

I have been doing a 5 speed swap for a customer this last month, so I got to see all this firsthand. He bought all his parts from fritz from a 5sp car. The PPF's, layed side by side, were identical in every way that I could find. There were differences in every other part, though. Currently everything is done except the wiring, and we're waiting on some harnesses to come in.

The factory part number between the auto and manual PPF's are the same and physically they are identical as well. I completed my swap back in February if you need any assist just let me know and I should be able to offer up the information you need.
The front of the transmission is supported by the motor and the rear is supported by the PPF so no tranny crossmember, however you already knew that as you mentioned. The rear differantial flange that connects the driveshaft to the diff is differant as is the driveshaft between the auto and manual. Some will say you can just redrill the automatic differantial flange to fit the manual driveshaft however there is a MINOR (1/2") differance in length between shafts and this also lends to the chance of drivetrain vibration due to the balancing being offset.
Good luck with the swap, trust me -- once you have the car back as manual it becomes a whole differant animal and the love only goes deeper.

Well, I have a 5 speed driveshaft and 5 speed rear end. The whole pumpkin I mean. Hopefully these idiots doing my car won't mess up the wiring now. I gave them 2 full good harnesses. I'd do it myself, but have nowhere to work and I'm not an electrical genius. :P I hope so Janus.
