tranny problem with the FD =(

ok so i thought my throwout bearing was going out...i would always hear a lil grinding noise but when i put the clutch in it stops...?

so i decided to park it in the garage for awhile......so i start my car...the grinding noise is VERY luod like now you can hear it from the outside of the car...so i let it warm up.....then as im driving its still very loud....sometimes with the clutch in as well and while in gear..
so i get on the freeway and it took a second for me to get it into 3rd...then i go to 4th gear and it pretty much doesnt even go in so i had to go pretty much from 3rd to 5th....so my question is...what could this problem be?
throwout bearing?
time for a new tranny?
any help i would appriciate it...

If you do it yourself, not much---the pilot bearing itself is only a few dollars.
If you take it to a shop....easily several hundred dollars in labor. I'm guessing that it's probably time for a new clutch anyway, so you might as well have that done and get the flywheel resurfaced (or a new one) at the same time. Take it to a rotary specific shop and they'll probably check some other maintenance items at the same time: re-torque the rear housing bolts, check the condition of the seals, etc..

If it were a pilot bearing, it would only make noise when the clutch is disengaged. Sounds like a trans bearing problem to me. Not sure about the shifting issue.

The noise you hear with it in neutral and cluth out sounds like the input shaft bearing, which means transmission rebuild since it is the last bearing to come off the main shaft.

The grinding when switching gears and problems engaging gears sounds like you have some syncro problems. Also, resolved by a transmission rebuild.

The parts to rebuild run about $500-600 from Malloy.

Or engaged and in neutral---but true, I missed the part where he said "while in gear". What are the chances of his input shaft bearing and snycros going out at the same time though? I'd start with the clutch side first---and hope it's not a trans bearing. Either way you're gonna have to drop the trans to find out....
