An tips on installing a new ABS speed sensor?

My passenger front ABS speed sensor had the wires pulled out - previous owner! I got a new one. I am having a lot of trouble forcing it into the socket. Removing to old one was tough. Even after I got it to wiggle in place it kept getting stuck on the way out.

It seems that the new one is slightly larger that the socket. I suspect that they build them this way for a snug crush fit. The problem is that I cannot generate enough force on the sensor to get it in the socket. I think it will respond to a large hammer but I would like to be more elegant if possible.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

make sure that the hole that it goes through is corrosion free and round. They are kind of a PITA. Be gentle though, they are easy to damage.

Yes, be VERY gentle with the sensor. A hammer or pliers can easily dent it. Make sure the hole is clean and smooth. Try using some normal liquid soap (like Dawn) as a lubricant. I know, it's sounds ridiculous, but it has helped me many times making parts fit better on the FD as well as getting parts off (like the exhaust hangers). It dries quickly and is non-corrosive.

Thanks everyone. Corrosion was exactly the problem. It was hard to see it but after much sanding it went away. It was certainly a lesson in patience!

After all that work it would have been nice if the ABS light went away. Well here I go to find the next possible problem.
