Think I'm going to need some wider tires
So, this isn't really a help thread as much as it is a need to brad about my FD. Yesterday I took my FD to Jeff at Rotary Power to get a long over due tune. The car has a power FC and a single turbo conversion. Due to traffic when i first drove the car I couldn't get a test on the car. Then later at night I had a wide open freeway on ramp and had to know if there was a difference now that the car had a proper tune. Got into a straight line and floored it. At first I noticed a little smother acceleration, then the turbo fully spooled. I lost traction in first gear in a straight line, no shifting. Now that's some power. I'm going to have to go up to the dry lake bed and learn how to handle this beast now...and if I can get some money some wider rims for some wider tires.

auto-x safe enviornment to really practice I had a friend who thought he'd mastered his car on a parking lot , and when he went to an event it was all over the place . cheap and safe and no tickets .
Also what wheels and tires are you running ??
you could be running 275's and they wont be better grip then some 245's of a good summer tire . the compound is VERY important . I used to break loose iwhen shifting into 3rd gear with 275 Nexus tires on a 9.5 inch wheel .
Changed my setup to 255 hankook rs3's and never lose traction weather its shifting or top of a gear

My car is my DD and the ultimate goal is to auto-x on weekends. Right now I have Dunlops on there on the stock rims. I've just never had a car lose traction like that before, straight line and not on a shift. I guess it's also because the car is so light. Weight to power ratio and all that. I wonder what my HP is

Breaking loose when mashing the "go" pedal in 1st gear doesn't necessarily mean you need wider tires... it just means you need to be going faster before you WOT
Regularly fishtail while downshifting into third (with anger) and THEN consider going wider...

1st gear and 5.5krpm isn't that horrible...
How much power are you making? Honestly if you're making decent power then I would almost expect some kind of traction loss with any violent downshift under 40mph or so... I'd say the answer is in your right foot as much as it is in the rubber.

First gear can be considered useless except for starting forward motion
What turbo are you running, and psi level?
It's about 2 hours from you, but Illicit Performance is another rotary shop (Glenn, the owner, KNOWS his ****) relatively "close" to you and they have an in-house dyno. He's located in Joshua Tree. Swing by there for a couple pulls to see what you're putting down (he may even be able to help get a bit more out of your setup while staying safe).
Spin out in 3rd gear then upgrade your rubber

Unless your spinning in 3rd gear, you don't need more tire to slow you down. Ideally, 2nd gear should be spinning but pulling if that makes sense. Having the right tire pressures also helps. I set my tires to 30 psi front and 27 psi rear COLD (in the morning BEFORE you drive on them).

Not wide enough. Idk... Sorry to thread jack but this thread is seriously lacking numbers and the board is still slow. <3
