Is there a way to test your if your oil seals are good?
I've had my engine sitting for about a year and I wanted to put it back. In my car I was wondering how I could test if all seals were good before going through all the trouble of putting it together. I tested compression and it was good in all chambers Ill be doing a coolant pressure test later so ill I have left is to ensure that all oil seals are good.
if the engine is out you might as well strip it m8 for the sake of some water seals, that way you can be 100% sure everything is ok as for checking the oil seals the only way i no is to take them out and check for brittleness cracks and splits im not sure of any other way
If you don't open the engine, the only other way to test them is to do a highish rpm stress test. Warm the engine up and hold the rpms above 6k for a few minuets. If you start getting bluish smoke, then the oil seals are bad.
There's not a real good way that I know of to statically test that. But, in general, heat and lack of oil changes kill the oil seals, not sitting. I wouldn't worry about that too much.
As with any engine install, make sure to crank the engine over to build oil pressure before starting the engine. That will insure the seals have a good flow of oil to them before starting the car.
