I recently was diagnosing my FD ignition system and tested for spark that way. I bought a new set of plugs to use for the spark test. I pulled the green circuit relay so they car didnt start. I got under the car and using one new plug, I unplugged each spark plug wire, plugged in the new plug and using some insulated pliers, held the electrode close to the block while a friend cranked the car.

you can actually get a spark plug tester which is like a 12v tester. Goes between the plug and wire. Lights up if there is current going to the plug. Got mine at harbor freight tools for $1.99. You canalso do it the old fashion was like mentioned above. Make sure you uses insulated gloves or pliers. I did it once on my brother's FD and shocked not only my hand but my knee since it was grounded to the fender
