Terrible exhaust sounds scaring me!

ok, have a new 94 rx7 good condition 87k miles 30k engine compression test pulled 8.4 front 9.0 rear so everything is good under the hood...car has a 3inch m2 downpipe w/ heat wrap, only other exhaust mod is some off-brand dual tip muffler that sounds REALLY REALLY good...now the problems are...when the car is idling, especially when cold...the car makes an audible ching-ching-ching-ching really quick like an idling chainsaw..its not very loud at all but bearly audible and comes from under the center of the car, near the primary cat...the other problem is the exhaust hanger is missing on the rear right side of my muffler causing it to squeak and move when revving could this hanger issue have caused a problem to my cat? where is this chainsaw sound coming from...also when the a/c is on the chainsaw sound is MUCH louder (only at idle however)...any ideas guys? im about to pay big bucks to have it lifted and looked at?

Check the shields along the exhaust. shake your exhaust (while its cold!) and see if that causes the sound. You most likely have an exhaust leak because of the strain on the exhaust from not having the hanger.

Save yourself the money and drop the midpipe (cat) and get some gasket maker, apply it around both sides of the gaskets and reassemble. Go buy the exhaust hanger and install it.

Good luck.

LOL Rich went all drill sergeant style on you!

I think these guys have it correct, get under there and give it a swing (car off, cold) and listen for the noise. I had a similar problem with noise and it was an exhaust heat shield rattling, but since your missing a hanger it could be something else.

i hav fixed the exhaust hanger issue, but I still hear weird noises

when the car is idling it continues to make a ching-ching-ching sound...like something is rattling except its a constant sound..when the a/c is turned on the volume increases alot more.. when the car is revved up the sound goes away but returns when brought back to idle...if the throttle is tapped lightly the rpms raise a bit and the chinging increases with them then the rpms drop below 750 with a ticking sound and then return back to idle

*when i shut the car off i hear a definate rattle as the engine stops

*i should also add that the car smells extremely rich to people behind me when i boost

i have a similar problem right now, but i know what it is. it turned out that one of the nuts holding my catback on, fell off. and now the other one is loose and the flanges were banging up against eachother.
