Tackometter problems

Maybe you guys can help me out. For a while now my tack have been coming and going. About two weeks ago it left for good. When I start up my car usually when the engine has been at rest for a while it works for a couple of seconds. It revs up to 1500 rpms and then dops to 800 rpms and just dies. I dont get a twitch from it for the rest of the day. Do you have any idea what it could be. If its a disconnected wire where can i find the wire the corresponds with the tack.
