Synchros

How many synchros are in FD's tranny ? One fore each gear (6) ? Where can one get them (Ray) ? How much would all the synchros run for ?

I found a mechanic (ex-race car driver&mechanic) that would rebuild my tranny on a budget, so I'm thinking of doing it...

It is not a simple question. I should know the answer because I rebuilt my transmission about a year ago. The problem is that for some of the gears the synchro components are two piece and for others they are one piece. I tried to open the on-line shop manual to refresh my memory and today my computer does not want to read it for some reason. Hence, if no one has responded by tomorrow, I will have an answer for you then. And, by the way, you cannot count on your local dealer to know anything about these transmissions. At least not here in the states.

Yea, I know, I cannot count on local dealers, thats why I'm asking here. That's why I also got a good mechanic to do it

Thanks.

Looks like 6 total, one for each foreward gear and one for reverse. I would buy a rebuild kit (bearings and syncros) from Cal Trans in Santa Ana California. They supply parts for alot of the transmision repair shops in the area and will sell you a kit without a resale license. They are alot cheaper than the dealer and have shipped to several friends in the past .Ask for stick or manual dept, several of the syncros look to be different so specify which gear you need if buying them individually. Good Luck!

As promised, you need one ring for fourth gear, there is a three-ring set for third gear, a three-ring set for second gear, one ring for first gear and one ring each for fifth and reverse gear. That makes for a total of ten rings. The synchro rings for second and third may only come as a set, but you need to know this when you are ordering your parts so that you get the necessary components. Have fun!
