symptoms of bad ignitor
Anyone know what typical symptoms of failing FD ignitor are?
I'm using FD ignitor in my FC w/ Wolf 3D and I suspect the ignitor is bad, basically by process of elimination. And the FSM says a Mazda tool is needed to test. ECU settings and wiring are correct.
Basically my Trailings are firing about 5% of the time and Leadings are firing about 30% of the time during cranking, very inconsistant.
Ignitor also gets pretty hot w/in a few seconds of cranking(might be normal, but I'm not sure, I'm not too experienced w/ FDs)
Thanks for any info,
Mike

The ignitor is nothing more than an electronic switch. Its outputs are either on or off, and it gates the leads from the varoius coils to produce a spark. The fact that it's getting so hot so quickly points to the possibility of excessive current. Since you are using and aftermarket ECU, be sure to check the ignitor's drive signal from the ECU for proper polarity and pulse width. (This could be the result of excessive dwell. )
While it is possible that there is a failure mode in the ignitor that could cause this (heating), I would first suggest checking the coils and associated wiring harness-- A wiring problem (short) or failed coil can cause this condition.
