Buy RTTT or RX7?

I had a 93 Stealth RT/TT up until last week due to it getting totaled by my son. I'm debating over getting another one or getting a 3RD gen RX-7. I read that the RX7 engines are good up to about 60K then have to be rebuild. Also read where maintenance is 8-13K a year. Somehow I don't belive that. What is the strait skinny on this, should I stick with the RTTT/VR4 or try a RX7. Also I am a mechanic and everythig would be done by me except an engine rebuild.

whoa there! i thought this thread was about a RTTT transplant into an RX7 at first glance...8k-13k a year is steep for maintenance, and if you do alot yourself, hell no not that much. I would say that is a very bad year lol

crock of ****... maintenance would be in the 1-2k range each year on average.
if you're a mechanic, just get the manuals; i'm not a mechanic and i just built a running engine for one of these so you'd find it a walk in the park.

don't let ya kids drive the FD though, lethal.

Actually wasn't his fault, the transfer case locked up and he fishailed into oncoming trafic. With the 4WS/WD on the Stealth, would the Gen 3 handle about the same for cornering? I like to canyon run. For the power to weight ratio, the Stealth would have to have 425HP compared to 300 on the RX7.

the FD handles like nothing else... amazing.
a stealth is like the Mitsubishi GTO in NZ i beleive... my FD killed my friends GTO through the twisties but watch out for boost spooling in mid corner.

Welcome to the club and good luck with finding a good FD. First off, if you dont know too much about rotary's, read through out this site and it'll teach you the basics of how a rotary engine works.

http://www.rotaryengineillustrated.com/

Also, before buying an RX7, read over this thread and it'll help you learn basic ins and outs of these cars, like what problems an FD could have, how to fix them, places to buy parts cheap, etc.

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/faq-3rd-gen-other-useful-links-68640/

There are a few threads in there on what you should do and look for when buying an RX7. It'll help out alot. Also, when you have a problem or just need help with something, always search for an answer as most problems have already been discussed in other threads. Trust me, it'll save you from being flamed by our sometimes unfriendly forum regulars.

Good luck with your future money pit.

I usually search first as always. Just like the Supra Forums, flaming is tolerated. So it looks like I will give the RX7 a good fighting chance. I'm down to building my MKIII Supra, getting a RX7 or another Stealh. The RX7 will have first dibs, I like the style of them.

Had that same thing occur (3 times) with my GTO (3000GT/Stealth)... fluid would slowly leak from the transfercase (only whilst driving) and eventually things would turn to custard and lock up completely. Apparently a very common problem with the seals not being up to scratch?

With equal drivers, I would expect the FD to outhandle the RT in the dry...
But in the wet, the weight and 4wd swing the ball back into the RTs court.

All depends what you're after really... I loved my GTO, there werent many cars that could out launch it... but the FD will quickly reel it in up top.

Given a choice between the 2 today, I'd go with the FD. It's far more fun to drive, but a whole lot less forgiving

Seems a little strange that a man old enough to have a son of driving age would feel the need to ask anonymous strangers on the internet what car he should buy....

All of your questions can be answered by spending time going through the stickied FAQ thread.

There is really no comparison in terms of handling. I used to own a 3000gt and even the non-turbo is 500+ lbs heavier than the RX7. The VR4/RTTT is 1000 lbs heavier! They're not the same class of car. The 3/S is a grand touring car, the RX7 is a sportscar. Now don't get me wrong I love both cars, but they're for very different purposes.

If you do get another 3/S, make sure you get that transfer case issue resolved. It's not the seal, it's the driveshaft yoke that needs to be replaced. The brass plug in the splined section of the yoke leaks.
