my guess is you will have to remove the headliner, and you should be able to access the mounting and motor of the sunroof assembly there....
That is honestly one part of the car I have never had apart....

The panel in the roof is easy, pop off the cover on the inside carefully and remove the 4 nuts that hold it on.

Because I needed to paint the inside of the roof as well...

Do it right, do it once

You'll have to remove the 1/4 panel trim, sunvisors, a-pillar trim and then the headliner. The sunroof assembly has 4 (IIRC) nuts/bolts that hold it to the roof. Once you get the headliner off it'll be simple.
The headliner is a little tricky if you don't know how it comes out. Remove the felt looking trim around the sunroof hole. Remove the one little screw that is under the dome light assy. Remove the 4 push pin things on each pillar. The rear of the headliner is held in with fairly aggressive metal snaps. Use a long screwdriver or prybar and *gently* slip it under the headliner from the hinged hatch side and pry right next to each snap and they will come right out. If you try just pulling on it you risk ruining the headliner. If your headliner is black it is especially hard to get used.
