Stupid question about how the interior door handles should work.

I'm putting my car together from a large pile of pieces so there are some things about which I have no knowledge.

If you lock the driver's or passenger's door from the inside, and then try to open the door with the interior door release, should the door stay closed or should the interior release over-ride the lock?

I just put my driver's-side door locking mechanism back together (thanks Fritz) and I just want to make sure it's working properly (door doesn't open from the inside if locked.)
