Stuck at Work!!

I am the last person at work so I'm basically stranded and now my key in the ignition won't turn. If anyone knows a way to fix this prob. it will be much appreciated.

try pulling the steering wheel clockwise and holding it there while you turn the key.

yeah trying turning the wheel a little one way and then try turning the key, if that doesn't work turn it the other way and turn the key...

Oh and if it's an auto make sure that it's all the way in park..

Is the steering wheel locked to one of the sides the problem?

yup. sounds to me like the steering lock is on. Try to hold the steering wheel to one direction and put the key in. you might want to check the obvious also. Do you have the right key? Is your key bent? Otherwise you can call someone to deliver your spare.

Also, if you tried jiggling the steering wheel before that might not do it. You have to hold the steering wheel down in either direction and turn the key at the same time. good luck.

I know I have the right key. That aggravating little bell starts ringing whenever I put the key in.

Is the car an automatic? (god forbid ). If so, make sure the brake's on (duh) and it's in park!

if that doesn't do it, in my car I have to have the steering wheel off the lock for the key to turn (i.e. the steering wheel cannot be pushing against the locking mechanism, otherwise nothing goes anywhere )

Good luck!,
Manolis

If the steering wheel is locked. Sometimes it can be a royal bitch so you are gonna have to try and pull pretty firmly from side to side while the key is in trying to turn so get the wheel to straighten out. SO you can start your car. Damn I had the same thing happen to me (if wheel is locked) and it pissed me off for like a minute but I don't remember WTF I did to get it to un-lock. Try messing with things to see if something will work. Put the E-brake down and try, step-in the clutch and try, press the brake and try.

I don't think someone was trying to steal it. I park right outside my office window and I don't see any marks on the door or window.

if your getting resistance with moving the steering wheel....its locked
you will need to... as others have suggested ...turn the wheel and hold then turn the key...
any possibility you dont have the key completely in....

The key would have to be all the way in for the dinging sound.

Do you understand what these guys are trying to describe to you? ( It sounds like the problem to me, but i don't want to reiterate what everyone else has already said.)

Good luck.

It was the damn key. When I got home I tried it and it was stuck again. I then went go get a new copy I have and used that one and now I don't have any problems. Thank god for spares.

The Forum does kick ***. I asked all of you before I even called my friends with FDs. Thanks again for the help.
