Stronger transmission internals?
Stronger transmission internals?
Looking to possibly rebuild or replace my transmission. I have plans to increase overall power and started thinking about rebuilding the transmission with stronger internals while keeping the stock housing (or one close in size). Just wondering if it's been done before and if it's worth it. Thanks
Its not really worth it. The stock 5 speed transmission is built very strong. Instead of spending way too much money on the unnecessary Greddy 6 speed, either rebuild the stock tranny back to stock specs or just buy one used. It'll be just fine for almost anything you'll ever do to your car.
Cryo treating will probably improve the strength, but how much more torque it can consistently is undetermined. The stock setup is relatively clean and strong.
Greddy has a 6sp gearset which is mucho $$ (see here: http://www.rotaryextreme.com/fddrivetrain.html) and I think it's dog-face engagement only. There are other options but they don't fit in the stock tranny housing.
I would bust a few stock gearboxes before deciding to upgrade the tranny - it's a very expensive upgrade to do, and used FD gearboxes are fairly strong and cheap compared to the upgraded options. Or see what Pettit, KD Rotary, or Pineapple can do to improve the stock setup for a reasonable price.

Appreciate the advice. (btw, sorry I didn't respond sooner, my internet has been down.) I'll probably just stick with my local shop at Pettit Racing, and get setup with a rebuilt one. I'll post pics if I start that project.
