the engine I may buy is a rebuilt , ported , with super seals .. apart from that the owner doesn't know anything else , with the stock twins .. owner doesnt know anything more than that .. do I need a standalone ECU to run this engine or the stock ECU should be ok ???? and if not do I need any other mods? ( still plan on going water/meth injection to help with cooling )

how about a pettit racing programmed ecu?

 

get a powerFC, it makes the car run better even if its 100% stock. They are cheap and easy to find on the used market. Your ported engine, well that could mean anything, but its going to need some changes to the fueling as a result if the port timing has been messed with.

port timing shouldn't matter, done plenty of ported engines(street ported that is, bridge and peripheral cause the vacuum signal to bounce too rapidly) on stock management systems without any adverse affects.

only reason you strictly need a reprogrammable ECU is if the boost levels become unsafe due to the porting or the turbos have been changed to push more air volume at the same PSI.

you are right though that it is nice to have control over engine functions, mainly to adjust boost curves and fan turn on points as well as adjust for inconsistencies in the fuel system that have developed over the last 15 years of use.
