street port questions

I have some questions about street porting. I just lost a coolant seal in my 93 and its time for a rebuild. I want to do a street port, but am a little afraid of doing it my self. how easy is it (with a template). my goal is at least 400 hp at the wheels with 15 -18 lbs of boost. (less would be better) I have no problem rebuilding the motor my self, but new housings are expensive if i mess one up. what do you guys think?

I have done this and it isn't that difficult. If you are confident enough to rebuild your engine and have the mechanical skills, go to it. Porting the rotor housings is actually more difficult in my opinion. Use a rigid table or support to hold the pieces so that they will not move easily. Bright lighting on and into the ports is must to see what you are working on.

I like using small carbide tools for the side housing and intake manifold porting, and a large sanding cylinder for the exhaust port.

While at it also port match the intake manifold to the metal gasket and to the side housing. Assemble only the 5 housings togther (can be stacked vertically) and place the intake gasket on. then outline the port openings. It is better to lap the side housing after you finish porting them just incase you have made a small surface scratch while porting.

You will have to get the templates from someone. I used a friend's who use to own a RX-7 shop.

careful...

I would have someone who has done it on a regular basis do it for you....if you fark it up(too little..too much...too wide..too narrow..too whatever) it is simply too much work to tear it all down again...but thats up to you...r u a betting man?

Thanks for the compliment G. I remember your ride... a very nice setup as well. I'm hoping to get some more power out of the new motor. artguy, I remember hearing about nick. He was the mechanic that worked on the car before i bought it. I forgot all about him until you just reminded me. thanks, i'll give him a call tommorow.
