Question Strange "clicking" noise coming from dash ??

Hey guys, my car has been making a strange clicking noise on occasion coming from the drivers side dash. It almost sounds like some sort of electrical switching off and on of something if that makes any sense. Sound will last for 2 seconds then go away for long period of time. Car runs perfect.........just wondering what the hell the noise is. Any insight is appreciated

I do have a click noise coming from the dash but mine is near the gear leaver and sounds only when I have a passenger. Located it to be the first clip (loose) of the plastic section, the one that covers the whole area around the gear leaver.

Still have to figure out how to cure it.

That's the warning buzzer for your engine (Shop Manuel/Electrical), it means your engine is gonna grenade!

If you only hear it at idle or light throttle, it is most likely the valve in the hard brake line mounted to the firewall. There was a TSB for this that includes a small rubber isolator to isolate the hard brake line from the firewall. I had to do this on my car.

Is this line located on the Driver's side ? That is where I hear the noise. Sounds like its coming from the far left hand side behind the dash........perhaps from the firewall. Again, it sounds like something switching on and off.

Rynberg, does this sound like what you had ?

Ted, it sounds like a ticking noise from behind the guages (in my case). You can do a quick test to see if this is the problem -- simply unbolt the hard brake line from the firewall at the driver's side (right above the master cylinder) and see if the problem goes away.

Mine did the ticking noise at idle and at very light throttle settings and/or letting off throttle at low speed.

Here's a link on how to solve the problem if this is what it is (scroll down to "Ech's"

Hmmm. My car has sometimes made a strange ticking type sound from behind the dash that almost sounds like water running. Only happens to me when it's cold outside and the engine is cold; goes away after it warms up. I never knew what the hell it was. I bet this is it!

Thanks Rynberg, it DEFINTELY sounds like its coming from behind the gauges. I'm gonna check it out.

What does this isolator like? A rubber screw of sorts?I'll have to describe it to the dealer... sometimes part numbers aren't good enough.

I'm getting an occasional slight 'rattle' behind the gauge cluster sometimes at 2k-2.3k... sometimes it switches its resonance to idle rpm when everything's cold. Often, it isn't there at all.

It's just a small rubber biscuit with a threaded post at each end. One end screws into the firewall and the brake booster line hangs on the other end. Whole thing is about an inch long and about as big around as a nickel.
