Stock turbos = noise makers!

Please Help!
Here's a problem that I'm very nervous in dealing with. I recently installed my own cool air intake using the stock air box and some upgraded pipes. These pipes consist of of a stainless steel pipes and fittings. It works fine, just as I had hoped, but now I can hear a rattling noise every time my Turbo/s spool. I could hear it before but could not pinpoint the origin of the noise.

How much would it be to get some (turbos) rebuilt?

Is there another solution?

Has anyone else delt with a common scenario?

Is there a link I can look at, that could help me out?

Is it even my Turbo/s at all?

Interesting.. a "rattle" isn't very descriptive. It could be part of your exhaust coming in contact with something else or it could be a bearing in the turbos. Does it accure no matter which turbo spools? if it does I have a feeling its not both turbos having the same problem at the same time.

It's really obvious when I lay off the gas in 3rd or 4th gear as the RPM slows down.

Gotta be under 10psi, the intake is the only thing I've upgraded that would have anything to do with it.

so you have no clue? you could be running like 6-4-6. Really need to get a boost gauge, so you know what boost your running it helps diagnose problems. I'll leave further advice to someone that has a problem similar or the same problem as you.

When you install aftermarket open intake system, you hear your turbos more. If its rattling, it could be just something as easy as unscrewed clamp or some bolt.
I doubt you would hear your turbos rattle. Considering they spin 100kRPM they would fall apart if they would rattle

Pop your hood, have someone sit in your car and give it some gas - and you look and listen carefully - and try to locate where the sound is coming from.

If its coming from under your car it could have nothing to do with the turbos and be ur cat. Thats where some annoying rattles can come from.

Your turbos better not be rattling, that could be a dangerous situation. It'd be a like a grenade going off in the bottom of your engine bay if one of those came loose. Not a good situations.

Can you describe this "rattle" any better? Is it definitely metallic? could it be plastic?

Boost gauge and downpipe should be your first mods. Not bling-bling.

While that may be true (read: is true), he already did this and is asking for help. Lets be helpful then, shall we?

I have some rattling sound under moderate acceleration at 3K rpm. When I roll down the passenger side window, I can hear it very clear. However the sound goes away when the car warms up a little. I am thinking maybe my exhaust is hitting something or getting loose after i install the DP. Any idea??

I doubt that would help, without the engine being under load (see also: in gear and driving) I'd question wether or not the turbos would spin fast enough to create any noise, lord knows without any load they wouldn't produce any boost.

It's almost like the noise happens when the Turbos are slowing down, or just starting up. It's definitly metallic, it's not constant, just in my lower RPM's, but it will happen consistantly (not stopping after the car has warmed up). I had an issue with an exhaust manifold once and there was a loud popping sound coming from the engine. This sounds nothing like that it's faster paced and not as loud. It dosn't sound forced just loose. But again it got noticably louder once I installed chrome pipes for my intake, leading me to believe it was my turbos. I've checked all my pipes and nothing's loose. I had determined it to be something internal.

Whe I installed the DownPipe I forgot to tighten back the ABS heat shield and made wierd sonds almost as you described, so check everything around that area, something may be loose and cause scary sounds, like someone said erlier turbos cannot rattle like that,,,

ABS Heatshield is also a good idea.
Just pop the damn hood and take a look with someone pushing the throttle (or you can do it yourself with your hand)

I'll check it out. By the way, if it is my exhaust, since I was going to mod it anyway what should I get to replace it? As far as CB goes.

As far as exhaust everybody has they're own taste for it, it's all what you want from you car, do you want a loud, medium or pretty quiet one, it's a pretty wide veriaty of exhausts.

First thing you should do is the DP and than go with the rest, don't forget the boost gauge is your #1 part on your list.

On my last thread I was given a pounding for wanting to put on a mid pipe, what will the down pipe do for me that the mid pipe can't? Or why is it a better idea to use a down pipe and hold off on the mid pipe? what boost related problems can I expect? Shouldn't this be a new thread?

I used to have that rattle before on my dsm, it was the way I ran the piping on the cold air intake through to the front, check to see any metal against metal, when my rpms fell to exactly 2700 it attled, something about the specific vibration the engine made, try finding that rpm spot and holding it there, if it sounds, just check for any metal on metal.

Search for pros and cons of downpipes and midpipes to answer those questions, they've been thoroughly answered on here many times.
