Stock Temp Gauge sensor

Hey I searched but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. My stock coolant temp gauge sits there and beeps at me. I know this because the black plug under the green plug on the filler neck is unplugged. My question is what does the black tube? that goes on the rear iron do. (The one under the oil filter pedestal that has a coolant line connecting to it) My stock coolant gauge will go all the way past red on start up so I am guessing it reads the temp from this location because if this is the sensor I don't have anything plugged into it.
Thanks,
Phil

The beep is from the coolent level sensor which is the black plastic plug with black wire in the front of the thermostat housing with a white plug . The sensor that feeds the gauge is in front of and below the oil pressure sensor on the drivers side of the engine . The sensors with black and green plugs feed the ECU to control the fans and the mixture and timing .
