I just wanted to make sure that the fuel maps are the same in all USDM OEM ECUs.

My car is an out of state Virginia car, but I am in California. I looked into the subject and found information that only the EGR related stuff in the ECU is different, but the fuel maps are the same. I'm assuming using a California ECU in this car will throw an emissions related code. Is there anything else that differs between the ECUs?

Could someone verify this before I go pump in 91 octane when this car has previously taken 93 octane?

My car was originally sold in North Carolina. I have had the car in CA since 2002. Never had any issues with the stock non-CA ecu, or 91 octane gas. Passed smog without any problems.

 

^ thanks... but as I understand it, cars sold for states other than California do not have the EGR switch or that function in the ECU?

My car passed smog but it was close, the NOx readings were high which I'm assuming is due to the EGR, or lack thereof

 

iirc you are correct in that there is no sensor for the EGR and i believe another smog related part in the Non-CA ECUs, but otherwise fuel maps should be the same for similar years, I think they changed a few things between 93 and 94 model years though check the link below, theres some good info there.

Back in the day when these cars sold as new there was 93 octane available in CA. You are over thinking this.
