Is this the stock downpipe?

You'll have to forgive the crappy pics...using a cell phone and there wasn't much room under my car...the previous owner didn't know anything about the exhaust...

It looks all stock to me, but he claimed it was aftermarket. The muffler itself looks like it was pulled off a beatup pickup truck or something, but the rest of the exhaust looks to be stock to me? I tried searching for stock exhaust pics but I couldn't find any, only aftermarket options.

What downpipe is the best replacement?

Is there any difference in mfg, or does it not matter once you get the stock pre-cat off?

Yep, stock pre-cat and main cat.

Not a lot of differences. The cheapie Ebay downpipes many times have fit problems. Get a good name brand downpipe, either buy one used or shop around some.

For years I ran a Bonez (from RX-7.com) downpipe I got for like $40 because it was all rusty and crappy looking. I sent it to Jet Hot for the 2000 degree ceramic coating, came back looking better than new and kept underhood temps way down. Damn good way to go there.

Thanks for all the info guys...

Another quick question, are downpipes turbo specific? I'm thinking about buying an exhaust that comes with a custom 4 inch downpipe, but I'm pretty sure it comes off a single turbo car. Will that fit my stock twins?

Not a chance. Downpipes are indeed turbo specific

I recommend an HKS. Easier to install than some of the others. I bought mine used. Save some money that way. Wrap it or get it jet hot coated. Do your research. It takes some time to install and you should replace your studs and nuts with OEM parts from malloy mazda. Ray will know what you need. Get a gasket from Pineapple racing. The OEM ones are very $$$.
