Steering wheel nut thread ??

I'm struggling here. The nut that holds the steering wheel onto the splined shaft.

It looks like M12x1.5 , but that's what the wheel nuts are (right?), and a wheel nut doesn't fit.

Help.

What thread is it? I have a 1/2" 20tpi on there at the moment but it's not right I don't think. I daren't put any torque on it anyway.

The stock nut is a Nylock nut, you definitely don't want it coming off. I don't think it's the same thread pitch as the lug nuts, that makes sense.

You might want to get a new nut to replace it if it's lost/missing/what have you. That is a nut that you REALLY don't want to fail on you. Get the right nut and do it right.

Or, get a thread gauge that will tell you what size and thread the shaft is.

The thread gauge told me it was 1.5 metric thread!
