Steering gear backlash

I'm wondering what parts of the steering system can have play in them. I have enough play in the steering to be disconcerting at highway speeds. It's way more than any car should really have.

I'm thinking of replacing all the bolts on the clamps on the joints on the steering shaft.

I've had someone wiggle the wheel through the play and I've held the tie rods, and the play isn't transferring to the tie rods, so it's something before the tie rods.

Anyways, any input?

Check the rack mounting bolts. They often come loose and cause exactly what you're feeling.

You will also get a few degree's of play fron the quil. It is two pieces sliped together and there is maybe 3 degrees of play in them. You can eliminate that buy welding the quil together.
