starting problems

Hi my name is nilo, I have a 1994 rx7 AT with the touring package and I just wanted to take the time to introduce myself. I'm really new to these forums, so I hope to learn more and figure out some problems I'm having with my car.

When my car becomes warm and I shut it off, if I try to start the car again, it will crank but won't start. I have to wait 15-20 minutes before it starts again. Is this a common problem? I thought it might have been the battery so I replaced it with a Die Hard, but it didn't help. Any advice will help.

Sounds like you have low compression. A cranking motor runs about 200-250 rpm. At idle they run at 750. In order to start the vehicle when hot (due to thermal expansion) you need to have good compression. at idle, the motor is spinning a lot faster so the compression that you are making is enough to idle. i'm not saying you have a cracked or broken seal, just simply a worn engine. how many miles are on it, any mods? a little more info would help me point you in the right direction.

Thank you for the response, sorry it's taken a while for me to reply. I actually created this user name for my uncle who owns the rx7. Unfortunately he is not technologically savvy, so he doesn't know how to reply to this thread.

The car has about 88k miles on it now. Afaik there are no mods on it, and it doesn't seem like there have been in the past. My uncle told me the previous owner was a lady in her 50s or 60s, who was also the first owner (I know... every used car buyer's dream). I'm assuming the best way to determine whether or not it's a compression problem is to do a compression test... any other ideas? My uncle said he doesn't think it's a compression problem because the motor has relatively low miles on it, but I figure if the last owner was a woman (not to be sexist or anything) it's possible she didn't keep up with her maintenance. I'm thinking the car couldv'e also sat for a long time without being driven (it's 14 years old, after all). Fyi my uncle's only had it for a year or two.

Check/test the FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulator) solenoid. It's used during hot starts.

Having similar problem. When I finally get mine to turn over I hear a noise resembling a great deal of fluid moving...nothing comes out under the car though. Wish I had time this week to rip it apart...

Can the FPR solenoid check be done easily or is the best bet to have a shop check out any start problems?

Thanks for the replies. I think my uncle might be hearing the same sort of fluid during start up too. Anyone know what it takes to test the FPR myself?

You need to install a fuel pressure gauge somewhere in the fuel supply line. By the way you are asking the question I would highly recommend having someone professional do it.

It's the solenoid you need to check, not the actual regulator. It's a standard solenoid.
