Starting Problems

So, i've been working on my car off and on for the past year and a half and still can't get it to run right. I started it one day in like april of 04 and it was smoking white/blue smoke like crazy. Well after replacing the turbos, and PCV (the one that vents the pressure from the oil pan) it was finally running with barely any smoke (only smoking when downshifting to slow down). Well that was durning the summer when it was last running and no it won't even start. It sounds like its turning over, i can smell gas and when i pulled the spark plugs off the rear rotor the smelled of gas. I've included some pictures of those spark plugs and well being pulling the ones of the front rotor tomorrow. Since i was running a lot of oil through the engine when it was having problems earlier (the reason it was smoking) im thinking the plugs could probably use replacing. Does anyone think that might be the cause of why its not starting. Do these plugs look fouled?

Thanks for the help

Sorry the pictures are so crappy

Wow. It sounds like you have your hands full. First of all, you said it sounds like it is turning over - you need to be sure that it is turning over before you go any further. As far as all the smoke - that isn't right. A small amount of smoke during a cold start is nothing to worry about, but smoke all the time means something is wrong. Blue means oil, white means coolant. If I were you, I'd replace the plugs and make sure that your battery is good - then go from there.

Is your check engine light on? How many miles are on the motor? Have you had the compression checked?

Thanks man, I think i got the smoke part taken car of, or at least better. Im pretty sure the PCV i replaced was jammed open and sucking up oil into the intake manifold, or something but when the car was last running it was way better. And it was only oil, my coolant was fine but my oil level wasn't. It just won't start now, its turning over and everyonce in a while it almost sounds like its backfiring or something. I havnen't got a compression test done yet, but it was running fine last time it started. Its been sitting for a while now.

Oh and miles on the motor i think is somewhere less then 30,000. It was replaced with a rebuild before i bought it. The unfortunate thing is that its a Hayes motor.

Download the factory service manual if you haven't already. There should be a link somewhere in the stickies. Here is a link to the thread with the 94 manual, although you may want to look for the 93 if that is what you have?

Start reading through the troubleshooting guide and that should help you figure it out pretty quickly.

You may just have a slightly flooded engine. Do a search for that if the below procedure doesn't work.

Start by replacing the plugs.
Then, the first time you go to start it up push the throttle all the way down, this cuts off the gas supply to the engine. Let it crank like that for 15-30 seconds or so, that'll help clear out any gas built up in the rotor housings. After that slowly release the throttle while continuing to crank.
If it seems like it wants to start up, but just keeps stumbling repeat the same steps.
This might be all you need.

Good luck.

Oh, one more thing. Check the main 120A fuse in the engine bay by the battery.
If that's shot the engine will crank, but fail to fire. A long shot, but it only takes 10 secs to check.
