starting problem

hey well this is about my friends fd

problem is the car will start once in a while but usually after you turn it off it wont want to crank when you turn they key

i think it starts up right when its cold? cause i was able to start it in the morning but after driving around it didnt want to start up so i had to kick start it

changed the starter, and tested the clutch switches but they seem fine...anything else that could be the problem?

thanks

is the motor good? check compression. if it starts when its cold that means that it is able to generate enough compression to starts and when it is hot (everything expands) and it cannot generate enough compression to start. had the same problem on my last FD.

is the solenoid kicking off? reason I ask is maybe you need to check your ground from the wiring harness to the engine block.

Not so much that the engine's blown. But when it's losing compression, it gets harder and harder to start when hot.

When you turn the key, does it make any clicking sound? or does it do nothing when you turn the key? Also is the car a manual or an auto trans?

It starts when it's cold, so starter and fuel pump are working fine... And he said he tested the starter switch. Don't see what's the point of your question ranchan02

actually its like this

you turn they key and sometimes it will start up (usually first try in morning)

other times you turn the key and nothing happens at all, no clicking, engine doesnt turn over, just the accessories will turn on, so it seems like its something electrical

its a manual trans

it is a quick way to tell if power is getting to the starter. and there is also a service buliten about autos having no crank when hot due to resistance in the battery feed wire. you need to see if the starter is getting voltage on the signal terminal on the starter solenoid(small single wire). check it when it is hot. just get a test light and stab the wire have a buddy crank the car, in neutral plz. how is the battery? connections good clean and tight? how did you check the clutch switch and which one did you do? there are 2? only one involves the starter.

k well this is what my friend emailed me about the car:

I tested the bottom clutch switch and it works fine. I had to remove the
connector box to get to the switch. I removed the switch and connected a
VOM meter to measure ohms for open/close condition. Pressed the plunger
until zero reading and marked it with a permanent pen, then re-installed
it. Depressing the clutch all the way passed the mark, so it's okay.

Today, I also noticed that there is a water leak right above the ECM
module located under the glove compartment. One of the outside terminals
had moisture on it. The ECM module looks fine, but I don't have the
tester to see if all connections are within specs.

When I started the car today, it read about .5 volts DC. The top safety
switch reads a constant 12V+ when the clutch pedal does not engage it.

When the key it turned to Start, and the starter does not work, I get 0
volts from the bottom clutch switch.

it is a super simple system. power goes from the ignition switch to the clutch switch to the starter. assuming the anti theft stock or aftermarket is not screwing you. you hould see ~ 12 v coming into one side of the clutch switch, then when you press the pedal you shoud see 12 v on the other terminal as well. at wich point you shoud be getting 12v on the small wire on the starter solenoid.
